  • Exhibits deficient T cell activity with lymph nodes and Peyers patches showing lymphocyte depletion in T-lymphocyte dependent regions
  • In this outbred immunodeficient model the vibrissae are present in the homozygous nude rat but bent with some short hairs on the head and occasionally on the rest of the body
  • At later ages some hair growth occurs but rats become hairless again within a few weeks
  • Skin of homozygous rat is generally pigmented, but occasionally an albino rat is seen
  • Consistent with ILAR nomenclature rules, Taconic has recently updated the nomenclature for the NIHRNU from NTac:NIH-Whn to NTac:NIH-Foxn1rnu.
  • Taconic has identified a defect in tooth enamel in the NIHRNU, which presents as white teeth in affected animals. This defect does/does not affect overall health of affected animals. Representative sampling of NIHRNU animals in our colonies revealed that on average 21% (frequency: 0.208 +/- 0.109 SD) of animals showed this phenotype.

Origin:

The NIH nude Spontaneous mutant model was developed by NIH in 1979-1980 by intercrossing eight strains of rats. Taconic received stock from NIH Animal Genetic Resource in 1981. The rats were derived by hysterectomy in 1987 and again in 1998. Animals are randomly bred at Taconic without selection for coat color or pigmentation.

Color:

Albino; black; piebald (sp/sp nude|sp/wt haired)

Species:

Rat

For some applications, weight may be critical. For orders where weight is critical, please place orders by weight, not by age. Taconic can accept orders by weight for this model. A minimum 10 gram span is required. All weights are weights at time of packing. Mice and rats can lose weight in transit. Orders for specific weight spans will be assessed a nominal fee. More detail on weight order policies is available.
