What Is the ABLE Program?

The Taconic ABLE™ Program waives breeding license fees on eligible genetically engineered models (GEMs) available from Taconic, so qualifying breeding and crossbreeding performed at Taconic proceeds without a separate per-project breeding license fee.

How the fee exemption works.

ABLE waives the breeding license fee for qualifying breeding and crossbreeding at Taconic. A licensing framework still governs the work — ABLE removes the fee barrier, not the need for defined terms. Standard model purchases do not, on their own, convey breeding rights.

The intent is straightforward: keep your attention on the biology, the model cross your study requires, and the downstream work — while Taconic manages the breeding.

Why ABLE Matters

Many research programs require more than a single model. When a study depends on combining a validated translational model with a research-specific line, licensing terms and project setup can create friction before the science moves forward.

ABLE reduces that friction in three ways that matter to study design:

Follow the biology

When your research question calls for a specific model combination, ABLE supports the path from model selection to breeding at Taconic — without a breeding license fee as a gating step.

Create the cross your study requires

ABLE supports breeding and crossbreeding of eligible models with your research-specific, custom-generated, or other applicable models.

Build from validated models

Start from eligible validated models with known genetic foundations and translational relevance to specific research questions — a defined foundation for the cross your study depends on.

A concrete example.

A team running an immuno-oncology study needs an HLA-transgenic background crossed with their own tumor-model line. Rather than managing the model cross independently, the team identifies an ABLE-eligible HLA line, crosses it with the research-specific line at Taconic, and works with Taconic to generate cohorts aligned to the study plan — with the breeding license fee waived.

How ABLE Works

Start with your research question.

Your study objective determines the model biology, genetic context, and experimental approach required.

Identify an ABLE-eligible model.

ABLE applies to eligible Genetically Engineered Models available from Taconic. These may be used in qualifying breeding or crossbreeding at Taconic with breeding license fees waived.

Combine with your research-specific model.

Where applicable, an ABLE-eligible model may be crossed with a customer-supplied, custom-generated, or other applicable research-specific line.

Conduct breeding at Taconic.

Qualifying breeding and crossbreeding is performed at Taconic through Colony Management Solutions (CMS).

Support downstream cohort generation.

Breeding is managed through Colony Management Solutions to support genetic continuity and downstream cohort generation aligned to the study plan.

enABLE Promotion

Accelerate Your ABLE™ Project Startup

The enABLE Promotion helps researchers initiate qualifying Colony Management projects by providing up to 40 eligible animals at no charge when the project is enrolled in the ABLE Program.

By reducing the upfront cost of starting a breeding project, enABLE helps researchers access ABLE-eligible GEMs while supporting efficient project initiation through Taconic Colony Management Solutions.

Offer Details

Eligible customers may receive up to 40 animals at no charge for use in a qualifying ABLE-supported CMS project.

The promotion is intended to support the initiation of qualifying ABLE projects at Taconic.

Standard Colony Management fees, husbandry charges, breeding costs, shipping charges, and other applicable service fees remain the responsibility of the customer.

Promotion Period

The enABLE Promotion is available for qualifying projects initiated between August 3, 2026 and December 31, 2026

To qualify for the promotion:

  • The project must be enrolled in the ABLE Program.
  • The model must be eligible for the ABLE Program.
  • The breeding project must be conducted through Taconic Colony Management Solutions.
  • Animals provided through the promotion must be 6 weeks of age or younger.
  • A maximum of 40 animals may be provided per qualifying project, regardless of sex or genotype.

  • Limited to one promotional allotment per qualifying project.
  • Offer has no cash value and may not be transferred, substituted, or exchanged.
  • Cannot be combined with other promotional offers unless otherwise approved by Taconic.
  • Taconic reserves the right to modify, suspend, or terminate this promotion at any time.

The genetically engineered models below are available from Taconic and eligible for breeding at Taconic with breeding license fees waived through the ABLE Program. For qualifying projects, eligible models may be bred or crossbred at Taconic — including with customer-supplied, custom-generated, or other applicable research-specific models.
