Nomenclature: BALB/cABomTac

  • Often used for the production of monoclonal antibodies, using hybridomas of BALB/c origin
  • Larger than the BALB/cAnNTac and BALB/cJBom, it exhibits good breeding performance and has a long reproductive life-span

Availability

Live production of this model ceased on December 7, 2015. This model is now cryopreserved and available for cryorecovery.

Origin

The BALB/cABom inbred model was developed by the Chester Beatty Institute. The Cancer Research Institute in Aarhus, Denmark received stock from the Chester Beatty Institute in 1956. M&B A/S (now Taconic Europe) received stock at F35 + 15 in 1968. Fibiger Laboratory in Copenhagen (Fib) received stock at F50 + 9 in 1972. M&B A/S (now Taconic Europe) received stock at F95 from Fib in 1988. The Taconic foundation colony was at F95 + 31 in 2000.

  • Pathophysiology: Low tumor rate in the absence of MMTV. High incidence in the presence of MMTV. Susceptible to streptozotocin-induced and encephalomycarditis (EMC-M) induced diabetes. High incidence of spontaneous calcified heart lesions in older animals. High incidence of spleen amyloidosis in older males. Very sensitive to radiation.
