Facilities that Serve the Biomedical Research Community Worldwide

Providing the highest quality lab animals and scientific services demands a considerable investment in the facilities, equipment and technology to produce consistent results. Taconic has made that investment - continually expanding and enhancing our facilities to ensure that we respond to investigators' needs for innovative models and supporting services, quickly and efficiently.

Through a network of seven breeding facilities and three lab sites in the U.S. and Europe - home to the most sophisticated equipment and the most talented scientists - Taconic ensures easy access to precisely defined animal models, along with supporting services in areas that include custom model generation, contract research, compound profiling, phenotyping, imaging studies, and surgical services.

Facilities Located in the United States

Germantown, NY
Taconic's Germantown, New York facility is the largest and most innovative maximum barrier rat and mouse breeding facility in the world, Taconic - Germantown employing our unique Isolated Barrier Unit System (IBUS™). Using this advanced technology, our Germantown site produces mice and rats at the Murine Pathogen Free™ (MPF™), Restricted Flora™ (RF™), Defined Flora (DF) and Germfree (GF) health standards for distribution to researchers worldwide. The facility also houses many of the genetic foundation colonies that are the starting point for Taconic animal models at all of our production sites globally.

Albany, NY
Taconic maintains several biotechnology service facilities in Albany, New York. The Albany lab facilities are equipped to perform genotyping, SNP analysis, biochemical analysis and molecular assays of genetically engineered models. Taconic - Albany Maximum barrier animal labs perform surgical modifications such as brain and vessel cannulations and create many disease-specific models. The Center for Cancer Research building includes a facility that performs contract research studies, such as tumor modeling, compound administration and research grade monoclonal antibody production, as well as a tissue culture lab to propagate hybridomas and tumor cell lines. The Isolator Breeding Solutions building houses contract mouse and rat models in isolators, providing researchers with extremely fast access to lab animals that are critical to their work.

Rockville, MD
Taconic - Rockville Taconic's Rockville, Maryland facility, staffed with experienced veterinarians and technicians, provides animal health evaluation and biopharmaceutical safety testing services to scientists in academia, government, and the biotechnology, diagnostics, and pharmaceutical industries.

Cambridge City, IN
This eight-barrier breeding facility produces select Murine Pathogen Free™ (MPF™) and Restricted Flora™ (RF™) mice and rats using the same Isolated Barrier Unit System (IBUS™) and Standard Operating Procedures as our Germantown production facility. Taconinc - Cambridge City The site's Midwest location enables Taconic to accelerate the availability and delivery of critical rodent models to clients in this region of the country.

Oxnard, CA
Taconic - Oxnard

Taconic's unique "Barriers within a Barrier™" facility in Oxnard, California provides clients on the West Coast with fast, easy access to high-quality MPF™ and RF™ animal models. Using Taconic's innovative BioBubble Barrier Unit™ (BBU™), this facility supplies researchers with inbred, outbred and spontaneous mutant mice.

Cranbury, NJ
Our 58,000-square-foot Cranbury, New Jersey site provides genetically modified model generation services, including the production of transgenic mice and rats using advanced pronuclear microinjection technology. Taconic - Cranbury This site also supports in vivo target validation through the proprietary, innovative PhenoTac™ phenotyping platform, conducts in vivo compound profiling through the unique EffiPRO™ solution, and performs optical imaging studies using light-producing transgenic models that employ bioluminescent and fluorescent technology.

European Facilities

Ejby, Denmark
The Taconic Tornbjergvej facility in Ejby, Denmark includes two separate sites that house eight barrier rooms and two isolator facilities for the production of rats and mice.

Ejby,Denmark

Bomholt, Denmark
Taconic's Bomholt site in central Denmark includes a breeding facility that produces many traditional inbred, outbred and spontaneous mutant strains of mice. Our location in nearby Ry serves as a remote site for the quarantine of customer-supplied rats and mice that require special breeding services.

Borup, Denmark
The Hallingore facility in Borup, Denmark is dedicated to the barrier production of rats at the MPF™ health standard. This modern facility uses a Central Processing Area to sterilize supplies for multiple barrier units.

Laven, Denmark
The Taconic laboratory in Laven, Denmark performs health testing on all animal models produced in Europe, as well as client-supplied animal models. Scientists at the lab also perform genotyping, cesarean sections, surgery, embryo cryopreservation and embryo transfer derivations.

Cologne, Germany
Our site in Cologne, Germany is one of two locations that employ the most advanced technology to produce genetically modified models to meet the unique needs of our clients. Scientists in Cologne use industry-leading technology in the areas of mouse genetics and genomics to custom generate models to meet precise research requirements. Innovative technologies used at our Cologne facility include targeted gene mutation (such as constitutive knock out and conditional knock out) and targeted gene replacement (such as constitutive knock in, humanization, targeted transgenesis, and gene knockdown in vivo using RNAi).
