Traditional mouse model generation takes, on average, a staggering 70 weeks as generation of enough experimental animals requires at least two to three generations of breeding. So far, most efforts to reduce timelines have been focused on expediting the genome modification steps by decreasing the level of controls applied to the genome engineering procedures. This can increase the risk of introducing unwanted mutations in addition to the desired change in the targeted allele.
ExpressMODEL™ is a novel approach developed by Taconic Biosciences to reduce the timelines to experimental cohort delivery from 70 weeks to 54 weeks. By leveraging recent advancement in gene targeting and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) technologies, ExpressMODEL™ enables the rapid expansion of founder mice carrying the targeted alleles from 3-4 animals to at least 20-30 animals in the first generation, therefore bypassing at least one round of colony expansion, saving researchers 3-4 months on overall project timelines.
