Model Description

  • Has larger litters and nurtures young better than inbred pigmented strains
  • Homozygous for the same coat color loci as the C57BL/6
  • Since this is an outbred model, some in the populationwill be homozygous for Pde6b^rd1 - mice may be blind
  • Useful for germline test mating of targeted mutation chimeras created using 129 agouti Embryonic Stem (ES) cell lines
  • Black Swiss females also make ideal pseudopregnant female recipients for embryo transfers of albino mouse lines

Origin: The Black Swiss outbred model was developed by Dr. Carl Hansen of the NIH Genetic Resource. N:NIH Swiss outbred mice were backcrossed to a C57BL/6N inbred background to generate a hybrid mouse heterozygous for the agouti locus. The mice were backcrossed ten generations (N10) to eliminate the agouti and albino alleles. Taconic received NTac:NIHBS litters in 1991. The mice were derived by caesarean in 1992 and rederived by embryo transfer in 2005.
