Model Description

DIO and DR have similar bodyweights on 'normal' chow

    • When fed a low fat (5%) diet from weaning, the DIO rats are larger but have the same degree of adiposity as DR rats. Given a 31% fat diet for several months, all of the DIO line develop:
    • Metabolic syndrome (obesity, hypertension, insulin resistance, hyperlipidemia)
    • Permanently elevated and defended body weight set-point
    • Hyperleptinemia
    • Lowered growth hormone secretion
    • Fasting hyperglycemia

Origin:
Outbred Sprague-Dawley® rats were selectively bred by Dr Barry Levin, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, East Orange New Jersey, for either susceptibility (DS) or resistance (DR) to diet induced obesity. After 20 generations of selection, each subline was bred for an additional 30+ generations. Taconic received donor stock from Dr Levin?s foundation colony in 2008. Both sublines were derived via embryo transfer into Taconic Production barriers.

Color: Albino
