"Inducible Transgenic Rat Model for Diabetes Mellitus Based on shRNA-Mediated Gene Knockdown"

  This is a recent follow-up publication to "Inducible and reversible gene silencing by stable integration of an shRNA-encoding lentivirus in transgenic rats" by Herold MJ, van den Brandt J, Seibler J, Reichardt HM. in which the results of the previous publication were confirmed and extended. The two publications together show very nicely that functional knock-down in rats can be achieved by two fundamentally different methods of stably introducing an shRNA into the rat genome: either by lentiviral infection or by pronuclear injection. While these two publications both apply knock-down of the insulin receptor to generate an inducible rat model for type II diabetes, they provide a break-though proof-of-concept opening up new possibilites to generate inducible and reversible rat knock-down models for a wide variety of further applications.
